2018 looks to become the worst performing year over the last decades according to figures revealed by Eurocontrol. They revealed that ATC capacities and shortages of staff have resulted in 50% increase in delayed flights during the month of October.
Reform ATM
National governments in the EU zone have been invited to top urgently take comprehensive decisions to reform the Europe’s Air Traffic Management (ATM) system.
Thomas Reynaert, A4E managing director (Airlines for Europe) stated that Europe’s Transport Ministers, who are meeting on December 3th, have a unique opportunity to take decisive action on behalf of their citizens and resolve the political bottlenecks that are contributing to these delays.
Airport strikes
The EU Commission released in 2017 figures illustrating the increasing problem. Since 2005, the European Union has faced 357 air traffic control strikes, 254 of which alone in French airports – which resulted in a 300 % ATC strikes in comparison to 2017.
