Port of Rotterdam states strong performance during Q1.

Rotterdam show healthy increases in the port’s main cargoes. Container. cargo totalled 38 million tonnes, which equates to 3.73 million TEU in the first quarter, an increase of 5.9 per cent and 7.3 per cent respectively, over the same period last year.

Transshipment cargo and dry and liquid bulk also recorded gains in the first three months of the year. By tonnage, cargo transshipment increased to 123.8 million tonnes, a 5.1 per cent year-on-year increase, while dry bulk recorded 19.4 million tonnes (+3.7 per cent), and liquid bulk increased to 58.5 million tonnes (+4.6 per cent), mostly due to an increase in crude oil to 28 million tonnes (+10.4 per cent), reports WorldCargo News of Surrey.

Breakbulk totalled 7.9 million tonnes (+9.2 per cent), thanks to a 10.5 per cent pre Brexit-driven growth of ro-ro business in the first quarter to 6.4 million tonnes. The Rotterdam port authority anticipates the whole-year result to be slightly over the 469 million tonnes achieved in 2018.
